During the Autumn/Winter 2021, Young Bristol’s Creative and Sports Leads joined with Avon Youth Club Staff to deliver two programmes for the Positive Changes Project. Two separate groups ran on Mondays and Tuesdays, both with a small cohort from the wider youth club members. ThePositive Changes Project received funding from The Southern Co-op’s Safer Neighbourhoods Fund, which is focused at reducing anti-social behaviour.
The activities included; Spray painting, print making, archery (at club and at external archery range), roller blading, dodge ball, boxing, basketball, ping pong, bag design, Christmas Card making, tennis, tag rugby, and drawing.
The two groups worked on a community task each – something to give back to their community. The first group were concerned about homeless and vulnerable people on the streets, they talked about the adults they see sitting around outside the shops. We contacted Caring in Bristol who were helpful in talking through the best ways to help. Due to covid (& safeguarding), a plan was made to use the funds to purchase items for the Christmas donations list, also to make individual Christmas cards for the 150 families/individuals which would be receiving a parcel from Caring In Bristol over Christmas week.
The second group wanted to improve the littering and rubbish around the youth club – together we worked with Bristol Waste to
supply new kerbside recycling bins and some mixed recycling bins for the youth club. They decorated the bins and will encourage their peers to use the bins properly.
The project was really popular and the club will continue to benefit from the new equipment we were able to purchase for the project including two new iPads which will be used for gaming, creative apps like animation and music production!
